Our eyes are two of our most important sensory organs. Despite this, many of us don’t take the time to care for our eyes the way we should. Here at Total Vision Eye Care in Whitby, ON, our optometrist provides eye and vision exams that ensure everyone who comes in to visit receives the eye care that they need.
What to Expect During an Eye Exam
One of the more important ways we can care for our eyes is by routinely visiting an eye doctor for an eye and vision exam once every year or so. During these examinations, two essential things will happen.
First, your vision will be tested. This portion of the exam includes the classic eyechart on the wall. Using this and a number of other tests, an optometrist will determine whether or not you have any refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. If your eyes do, in fact, have a refractive error, a prescription for glasses or contacts can be given to you in order to correct the problem.
Second, your eyes will be examined. The purpose of this examination is to look for any signs of disease or illness inside your eyes. In order to complete this phase of the examination your eyes will have to be dilated, which can make driving for a number of hours after the procedure problematic, so make sure to make the proper arrangements. The dilated eye portion of the exam is the most important part of the exam because a number of debilitating eye diseases, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts, exhibit no noticeable symptoms before they have already caused significant damage to a person’s eyes. They can, however, be detected early with dilated eye exams.
Don’t Skip Your Eye Exam
Regular eye exams are crucial to maintaining good eye health over the years. Even if you haven’t had an eye exam in a long time, have no noticeable symptoms of eye disease, and see perfectly, the preventative care an eye exam provides is a worthwhile investment. Your eyes are important. Give them the care they need to stay healthy.
